No idea what happened yet, mate. I think it may have been an oil supply problem at the moment as I didn't use my original oil feed pipe. I'm getting the car back on the ramp tonight but feel a bit deflated after all this happening again in such a short space of time. I'll crack on with it tomorrow. The sump is coming off to check the strainer isn't blocked aswell. I'm about to lose £60 worth of engine oil aswell, bad times

I've sent the compressor wheel for the old turbo to a billet wheel company in Japan to get them manufactured but that's going to be a while. We also came to realise the car is crying out for a set of cams, they are indeed standard at the moment. We tried to run the car at 2 bar and it was extremely quick but we had to lower the boost due to possible valve bounce. So cams and springs are in order for it aswell.

I can't say for definate but the compressor wheel has made contact with the housing. There were no oil supply problems with the last turbo and that's the only thing I can se causing a problem that's been changed. I'll be stripping the turbo down in the next day or so, so all will be revealed.

I've only gone 300 miles in the car since I bought it two months ago and 150 of that was driving to get the car mapped on Monday, lol, so I'm.desperate to use it properly.

I've literally just ordered GSC S2 cams, bc springs and titanium retainers for it from the States but unsure of when they'll be here. That'll allow me to raise the rev limit from 7500rpm to 8500rpm straight away and give me a good hike in power as the gsr cams are pretty ****.

Can't believe only 300 miles since you bought it that's crazy man! Hope it will be more reliable once it's built this time!!

Yeah, it really needs a higher rev limit to be honest as it bangs through the gears at such high boost levels and on the gt35r. I only had a 2500rpm power band as we were hitting full boost at 5k rpm. As soon as it came on boost in 1st-3rd you almost had to short shift it as it revved so quickly. I don't need to touch the head now after buying the cams as the 4g63 head flows so well as standard you only need to start opening it up at 650bhp, it's almost like having a VET head as standard.

I'll be glad to get rid of the screamer pipe though, really didn't like the sound of it.

Well I finally got the turbo apart earlier, I was going to do it on Saturday but decided to stay in bed. It's clear what's happened but to be honest I'm unsure if this has happened while fitted to my car or the previous owners car, I'm a tad more inclined to think the exhaust wheel damage happened on the guy I got the turbo off car and the last little push while we mapped my car finished it off.

I don't think it was an oil related failure now, it just seems like the exhaust wheel damage has caused a huge imbalance in the shaft assembly and the rear cartridge has destroyed itself resulting in parts of the car quite possibly being in the sump, as there's a few bits that are unaccounted for. More work is to come yet but not much will happen for the next couple of weeks I reckon. Anyway, here's what I was left with once I took the turbo apart...

That looks pretty bad. Shame you haven't really had chance to enjoy the new car.

I'm sure it'll beepic when it's sorted.

Cheers for the support, chaps. My new billet wheel arrived today in the mail, it looks like it'll flow well but it and the compressor housing need some machine work to go together well. I could of had the car running this weeki but I'm away with the other half and the cams haven't arrived yet so it'll have to wait another week.

This is the new wheel again the 35r 82mm wheel...

A little more has happened with this. I had some more time to strip the oil restrisctor out of the rollerbearing core and the main oil supply did indeed have a very small shard of swarf blocking it partially. So the turbo suffered from two faults... That doesn't really help me out, but it just lets me know exactly what's going on. The swarf was definatley not from my engine as I inspected the previous bearings and there was no contamination marks after the 3.5k miles it had done.

Anyway, engine work has started, I took the sump off a couple of days ago, the oil pick up was holding the rest of the turbo internals that were missing (no pictures though). The sump had so much sealer used on it it had a huge thick rim sitting on the inside edge:eek:, I'm actually suprised none of it broke away. That's not the best bit, half the sump screws were finger tight, only being held in with the sump sealer. It's a good job I work on my own cars, I'm very particular and always double check everything (shame I didn't check the last turbo though, serious rookie mistake:D).

To move things on... The cams I ordered were on back order even from the manufacturers, so I changed my order to the slightly more expensive but boldly quoted ''the best'' 272 cams available on the market from Kelford, which arrived with a reduced vat bill earlier in the week...

I actually saw a rolling road printout for an Evo earlier with the same spec engine as me, with these cams and the same turbo I'm running making 540bhp at 1.8 bar. The turbo is actually rated at 56lb per min, so roughly 560bhp max. If it is accurate, which I won't be willing to say it is, I could be looking at roughly that figure as I'm planning to run more boost.

One other thing I noticed while the sump was off is the engine has 1200bhp rated rods in it:wack:. I had to do a bit of searching to see what spec they were, as I have no receipts for the parts, just the engine build itself. It does indeed have forged rods, pretty bloody expensive ones too, and forged pistons at least, lol. It also has the uprated Mitsubishi headgasket which has been classed better than a lot of the aftermarket ones.

Nice!! So in some ways bad but in some good! Love little bonuses like that! At least you know the engine will be up to task! Glad it wasn't any worse......
I try and do as much work on mine myself now too mate as then you know exactly where you stand. If its something I can't do then I get polo involved lol that's some decent power your gonna be running then mate, what sort of torque figures you gonna be looking at with that set up?? Will be like my mates evo 5 spinning all 4 wheels in 4th lmao

Yeah, it's not all bad, mate. I now know for sure what the engine is capable of. Hopefully I'll see some markings on the piston crowns once I get the head off at the weekend as I can't see **** from the underside of them, just to identify what make they are. Forged pistons aren't exactly poorly made but from the spec of the rods I can't see them being cheap ones... It's funny though, I go on the MLR pretty much every day and for the amount of member that club has and has had over the years it's the biggest load of **** I've ever witnessed! I've tried to find some tech threads on a few bits in the last couple of months and I couldn't even explain how many threads have had replies with ''speak to your tuner, mate''. That club is full to the brim with some of the most ignorant, idiotic, wasteful people I've ever come across. It annoys me how pathetic it is.

Slight, rant:D. Chris, no idea on torque figures but the Evo engine is very torquey anyway and tends to produce torque figures near bhp unless running very large turbo's.

Adam iam so pleased for you mate and its nice peace of mind to no your cars built properly cause you done it and not a grease monkey. and 500+bhp :) :D  yeah now that's really serious, i always think evos are like them monsters you get scared of when your little that you think are lurking under the bed, there scary, mean looking and savagely fast, sometimes i really wish i had an evo. and sorry to here bout the MLR site i do think its quiet amazing how many nice people there are on this site as odds say that out of set mount of people so many should be numptys, umm hang on though i come on this site don't i lol :p

Luke, I work for a well respected engineering company and I genuinley spend my living telling mechanics how to do their job properly. So I never let anyone touch my cars except me.

You wouldn't beleive the **** I got off my boss after the second turbo blew up though:wack:. He gave me a lecture on everything I know and missed the most basic operation.... I went and ordered myself a bouquets of woopsy daisy's:D
