I have heard mlr is full of tosspots with too much money , my mate Kirsty uses the site and knows more than most of them , but then her boyfriend is romain levesque and he defo knows what he's on about lol shame there isn't more info on there you would have thought with the amount of people that have evo's and use that site there would be plenty of info about? Sounds more like a dating social site lmao
That is defo one good thing about this site , loads of info!
I'm sure you will work anything out you need to know anyways man , I have every faith that you won't kill another tubby and you can display your oopsie daisies loud and proud ha ha ah

Well I got started a bit late today as I had a few drinks with some pals last night then had to do some running around this morning. I got the rest of the remaining sealer off the block and sump and got any crap out of the oil strainer to stop any possible contaminants getting drawn up to the top end

I literally just had enough engine sealer to get the sump back on too, so that's now all bolted into place

I've just had the rocker cover off to start removing the head and its got arp head studs, I've just bought a new set of them aswell, so they weren't really needed but I might aswell use the new ones regardless.

Another nice little find! Glad you are keeping it moving in the right way, sounds like the engine itself is a pretty decent spec to start with!

Yeah, it was a nice surprise. They are re-usable items but I might aswell stick the new ones in so I know for myself that its got a fresh set, besides the car was running silly boost before :wack:

i had to stop with removing the top end as I couldn't slacken off the cam belt (I've never worked on an engine with a timing belt before), it turns out you require a specific tool that winds into the block and adjusts the tensioner to slacken the belt so you can remove the cam pulley's. anyway I bought the tool, so I'll get the head off this weekend.

more important news though, the turbo is finally built up. It's a bit of a ****ed up spec, as everything was custom built. The compressor wheel was machined to a specific size, we had tot make all of the internals custom as nothing was a direct fit. There's nothing like this on the market, so I'll just have to see how it performs. It may say Turbo Technics on it but what's in it now has nothing to do with them. Comp wheel specs are... Billet 5 blade wheel with 56mm inducer and 78mm exducer, which is basically between gtx3071 and gtx3076 comp wheels. I'm really looking forward to see how it performs...

Love a bit of kustom one off goodness!!! Hope it spools well and give you what your after!!
It's good to learn new things! Have to admit don't think I have ever worked on a car with a belt either dude..
Have I agree with you on replacing stuff too , the way I see it if you have it apart regardless if the parts in there are upgrade you may as well replace them with new ones if you have them, makes sense really..... This is gonna be insane when your done with it man!! It screams track!!!! Ha ha ah

Adam, yeah it was meant to be an everyday car, not sure if that's a wise decision at the moment. I still need to lower it slightly aswell, everything I wanted to do to it has been forgotten about with all these silly little things happening.

Well, I got the head off today, it only took about 30 minutes once I'd slackened the timing belt. I can't use my valve spring compressor on the Evo head though as its an odd design, so I'll either need to buy another one of make a tool to get the springs out. I finally found out what pistons are in the motor too, it's running Wiseco forged pistons, so it's got all the parts that I was told it did.

i did notice that whoever built the engine snapped their Allen key inside the top of one of the ARP head bolts and made a bit of a mess. I had to use mole grips to remove this stud in the end. It's a good job I'd already bought new studs for the head too...

I have a spare SR20 head at work too so decided to put the Evo head next to it and show people how restrictive the SR20 is. That'll explain why Evo's can run up to 650bhp without and head work.

Wow major difference in the port sizes, the Evo ports look very similar to my VVL head. Glad the forged engine parts were found in, phew..

It's nearly finished! :D

I spent about 6 hours on it today and got all the time consuming stuff finished. I stripped the head down and fitted Brian Crower valve springs, BC titanium retainers, Kelford 272 cams and brand new larger Mitsubishi lash adjusters to stop top end rattling afrom cold starts as they were a design fault from the factory. Here's a picture of some of the old parts removed...

New spring and retainers fitted...

the head all back together ready to be fitted...

block prepped with new ARP head studs wound in and gasket placed down ready for the head...

the head all bolted into place...

i forgot to take pictures after that. The cams all all timed up, cam belt and pullies are all back on, turbo, manifold, inlet and exhaust are all fitted. I literally just need to plumb in coolant pipes, vacuum lines and odd nuts and bolts to get it all back together and it's ready to fire up. Getting excited now :D

I did mechanical engineering at college but quit after a year to work in the turbo trade, been there for some time now, so I've learnt a lot over the years... Still got a lot more to learn though, you can never know everything :D

engine work is easy anyway, mate. It's just boring and time consuming, I actually hate doing it but I refuse to pay someone else's labour charges for something I know how to do myself.

Completely agreeing with that sir ... also I won't feel comfortable making a stranger work on my engine without me being there 24/7 :wack: to see exactly what's going on...heard too many nightmare stories about engines built by "master tuners" getting f**ked up after a few miles or so.nobody cares about your engine more than yourself...and Building engines is freakin' awesome :D

There's also that, mate. I've only met one person in 10 years that I'd ever let work on my engine except me, but he's not around anymore. I just hope something else doesn't let go for a while as I'm going to try for 2 bar again with this new setup :D

i also forgot to mention the inlet ports on the head have seen some porting work, I thought they didn't look standard inside and under closer inspection it has had a little bit of fiddling, not much, but its been opened up slightly.

Yeah I was thinking of buying a spare engine taking it apart to see how it works I love getting stuck in lol
2 bar!! Massive smiles per miles!! This set up is going to be insane man, should eat just about anything on the road.
Another little bonus ! You keep finding nice little touches on this engine, must save you quite a bit of money and piece of mind knowing things have been done properly!

The last person I took out in the car told me I should have a go against some bikes because of it's straight line acceleration. I've not even launched the thing yet :wack:.

Honestly, the SR20 is a hell of alot easier to work on than this engine, complexity wise. I stripped an SR20 down some years ago and it's so basic in how it works, not in a bad way, just a lot easier in its components. I've owned cars with chain driven engines right up to this point and I'm used to a chain being the unservicable item, I'm not looking forward to replacing a cambelt on this engine though, lol, it looks like a **** of a job (I didn't replace it as it looks fine).
