Ok scratch the S14 conversion - I need a stronger box lol!!!

Think anyone interested in drifting, giving more than general abuse to the box or high power 350+ bhp applications should deffo consider this:

http://www.driftworks.com/forum/par...5-gearbox-conversion-groupe-buy-take-two.html

Was chatting to a good drifting mate of mine at a party tonight (usually talk nonsense but tonight I had loads of Q's about gearboxes haha!!) and first thing he said was S14 conversion ok - done many times but what about an actual stronger box like the one from the RB25?? I was like TELL ME MORE!!! (Tilly who's also on this forum mentioned this a while back but I forgot about it)

Basically it seems (as mentioned by Nicely and others I've read on here) the S14 box is no stronger than the S15 chocolate 6 speed... so with this in mind, I don't have the patience to see through future amounts of endless gearbox swaps, especially when I get the power up to 350 bhp or beyond and will be attending DWYB much more regularly.

My Exedy organic single plate is now slipping in 5th/6th and I've had it on the car for only 4-5 months??!! :wack: :wack: This is more than enough to cope with!!!

Sooo - I've read the above and first thing is for me to buy the RB25 adaptor plate which Polo is selling. Then get the R33 GTS-t box which can be picked up for between £200-400. Propshaft, gearbox mount cross-member, clutch slave cylinder and a few more items from the same car can be purchased for around another £100.

I can find out someone to send the propshaft to be shortened to correct length for around £70 by the looks of it... and with a few other mods required it should all fit ok. It's been mentioned that these plates have made their way to two S15 owners and they've done the conversion without problems

So that's my Christmas spent looking at Jap breakers and scanning Skyline forums lol

WORSE IDEA I'VE EVER SEEN! 6mm plate is too thin and you MUST bash out your tunnel. Shifter needs customising, R33 input shaft is shorter than s14 and then the whole lot gets spaced back further so you loose spigot location and clutch disc spline location, and it's only 6mm :wack: I think my alternator brackets are about that thickness LOL

I've seen alot of conversions already and this one is pretty bad :|

Well I've been in contact with a few people who have done this (some are drifting with this conversion all the time) and it works for them... so that's enough for me... and they're all running much more horsepower than I ever will :)

i looked into this and yep it does obviously work but.....your gearstick will change positions and you need to modify (cut) the centre console or chop the stick up and weld it, its apparently noisy as the are exposed portions of the bellhousing and the ratios wont work that great with the s15 diff.....also there arent as many mountings as with a stock box. i didnt want to compromise with a bit of a bodge......

Yeah I got the thing about having to mod the way the gear level is positioned with the box being a few inches forward from the S14/15 box position... Obviously not going into this blinded, will be trying to get hold of someone soon to see the work that's gone into their conversion up front and make my final decision based on this.

Speaking from experience I'd recommend a z32 kit over that 6mm plate :)
Wing - do you know how much is involved with the Z32 conversion?? Will it be similar to replacing with S14 box so I'll need the box itself plus prop, clutch, flywheel, starter bolts etc?

If you can pop a link on here to more info that will be much appreciated dude

The only thing now with going for any conversion that needs different clutch/flywheel is that I've gone and bought an Exedy Twin which is being fitted this week!!! *grrr* :wack:

i wouldnt.
ive had that kit on my s14a ran over 410bhp and had no issues with it
good bit of kit tbh

also i know paul very well and hes a perfectionist
when my 6-speed goes im rebuilding it for 600 pound and having the year warrenty then trying to kill it again before the warrenty expires ;)

or getting a qualiffe straigt cut dog sequential box (mmmm porn)

Si - if you can forward details of person who rebuilds your box that would be ace dude :)

Just out of interest, anyone know any gearbox specialists in the Midlands area?

Cheers

all gearbox conversions require basically the same parts (essentially everything between clutch and tailshaft/propshaft) so it's down to design differences between them, and the (technical) design details are the biggest factor to consider by far...

But I'll have to revisit with a bit more info when I get some time :)

Cheers Wing - no worries about getting info on Z32... I've decided to give all the damn RB/Z32 conversions a miss

Ok - put some options on what I was planning to do box wise on the other clutch thread but pretty much decided on this now if I can't source an S15 box in good condition as a direct replacement:

S14 clutch/flywheel/box/prop

The only predicament I have is that if I plan on getting a diff that's more drift friendly (been recommended summat like Kazz 1.5 way cos not sure about going all out with 2 way), if I do this before the box goes then I'll be getting one that replaces the S15 stock item.

If I was to do this and then get all the S14 transmission stuff to replace, will the prop shaft fit onto the Kazz diff designed for the S15? I still can't see a definitive answer on the forums that confirms whether S14 prop mates onto S15 diff without probs??

Also the S15 diff as standard has ratio of 3.69 IIRC... this is too tall for the S14 box so if I got my Kazz as a 4.1 ratio or summat thereabouts, will this be too short if I was to use this on my current S15 box before I replace with the S14 box???

i.e. does: S15 BOX + KAZZ 4.1 DIFF = NODDY CAR THAT NEEDS COUNTLESS GEAR CHANGES JUST TO GET UP TO AROUND TOWN SPEEDS LOL??!!

Don't blame you if all the above is confusing as sh*t haha... took me a few goes to write!! :wack: :wack:

Cheers for all the help so far guys - much appreciated :)

You're right, that is a bit confusing lol, but I'll bite :)
First off I think we should talk about this in the one thread, so I'm not going to look at the clutch thread anymore hehe

OK, any gearbox conversion will require basically the same amount of parts, and flywheel/clutch kit is a maybe, depending on what you buy.

Diff centre - if you put it into your s15 housing, just reuse the rear half of your standard s15 tailshaft. The front half you can customise to suit any gearbox you like.

Diff ratio - practically every s15 owner I know has gone out, or is planning to change their diff ratio after doing a gearbox conversion LOL. The specs of all the popular nissan 5 speed gearboxes have practically identical gear ratios and it sucks, the car will feel like a lag monster.
is 4.1 too high? Nope, not at all IMHO - the gearing with a 5speed box + 4.1 final drive is still longer than a 6speed box + 3.7.

Cheers Wing...

I'm a little confused with how to replace the diff... I always thought owners just bought say a Kazz item and changed the entire diff (replacement unit)??

You and others have mentioned just getting the internal diff mechanism swapped out... someone even told me to swap my rear axle for a replacement set off Skyline, upgrade the diff from the Liner to the ratio I want and then sell my stock S15 axle plus diff to make money back lol?!

I'm thinking about going to 4.3 now but this depends on what the future gearset is like as I've PM'd you about aftermarket gearset (no way keeping stock S14 gears in the box - too weak!!) ;)

definately input bearing..this doesnt mean impending doom for the gearbox.. ive run many like this and never had one fail.

if your tricky enough you can play a little tune with it...!!!
