Garage D 6 Speed S15 Gearbox Strengthening ( Circlip Fix)

Have final managed to get a price from Garage D and breif details of the modification

They have tested the strength of the gears and found a few of them to be weak so these are replaced for stronger ones. Also the common circlip problem has been modified using a solid ring to prevent that problem. As I am told they have tested the box and it is much stronger than the stock item allowing for more power and more fun on the track :wack:

I was priced £450 for the box + me giving them my working box.
I am also getting them to fit this along with my clutch, flywheel and braided clutch hose for an additional £150!!! Which I think is pritty dam good!

Should be on the car and working within the next few weeks so as soon as I have tested it myself I will report back

Just hope its all good as the only other option without changing to a 5 speed or Z32 is the Nismo box and they come in at £6K!!!!

Sounds interesting, this circlip issue been around forever, so if this is a real fix, happy days. Will need someone at 400plus with this mod to give it a good testing though.

Yeah we'll I hear that they tested it upto 600bhp, but that just what I heard, not to sure I that's true or not.

They said the box itself is very strong just like the skyline boxes, it's the circlip that causes issues along with 6th and reverse. I will be running around 350bhp once I have had the car mapped with the new turbo and injectors so see how it copes with that

The other issue is the ratios and the weak input shaft. You should be able to cope with 350 bhp, just try to make your shifts smooth. What style of clutch are you using?

I went for the Exedy padle clutch and DW 6 Speed flywheel. I was advised that as good as the organic ones are they will start to wear quite fast at 300bhp + so the paddle was the better option. I don't use the car every day, it is only a sunny day/ track toy so having a aggressive clutch doesn't bother me

And for anyone tht has heard the DW lightweight flywheels are just S14 ones and won't fit....... You need to use an S14 clutch with them otherwise they will not work. You also need to use S14 flywheel bolts which are now included then everything goes together properly

Just make sure of using those S14 flywheel bolts. When I put my lightened Exedy flywheel in I could'nt use the S14 bolts as they were too short. They did screw in but not enough to be safe.

It won't go together properly jor04n, the input shaft won't locate because the bush is located in the face of the flywheel on an s15, on the s14 it's a good inch or more further away in the crank itself. If you are running an s15 box on an s14 flywheel then the end of the input shaft isn't located at all, it can't be unless the flywheel they sell is designed as a conversion flywheel only incorporating the spigot in the face of it. I'm not sure on the long term downsides of the input shaft being able to wobble about and as the splined section goes through your clutch I would think this would put extra stress on this end of the shaft itself...

It's an S15 flywheel but you have to use a S14 clutch with S14 flywheel bolts it Is a conversion in a way but you must use a S14 clutch. That's what Garage D said who have fitted them before.

I see mate. S14 clutch plate and cover and bearing all fit true can't understand using s14 flywheel bolts on an s15 flywheel because it's thicker but there you go...

Well if I have any problems I have only brought what was recommended and I'm not fitting it so of there are any problems it's on them. Hopefully it will all work out, I hope as I don't want to destroy a new gearbox

Just got off the phone to both Garage D and driftworks and they assure me that it will all fit without any problems. But for some reason you must use an S14 clutch and not an S15 one as the conversion will not work properly. Not sure why that is as I thought S14 and S15 clutches where the same???

Is there anywhere else doing this!? Or whether they sell the bits seperate to do the fix?

No you have to get it done there as they have worked together with a gearbox specialist to design the fix. And to be honest at £450 for a basically brand new box that has had the mod work done I think that is pritty fair. Wouldn't fancy taking a box apart myself!

It's not a case of the money but more a case of not wanting them to work on my car as had bad experience in the past. If my box starts sounding unhealthy I may not have a choice though if that's the case

I like the sound of this too, what have they actually changed in the box? One of the actual toothed gears? How did they fit the solid ring instead of a circlip?

Sounds like a bargain though mate, if they are quite helpful then pics would be amazing of what the gearbox specialists actual did. And also who are the box specialists? Because I hate the word "specialists" it just reminds me of Ali g!

I've got one of these too. Need to pick it up from Julian and the guys when I get a chance. I'm not sure on the details of the circlip fix but I'll ask when I'm down there. Should also point out that the price may vary depending on the condition of your 'box. I'll get mine picked up and fitted asap and report back to you.

On a side note, I've dealt with Garage-D many times and recommended lots of people to them and never had anything but praise. One of the few places I'd trust with any of my cars.
