Tyre shop f'd up my car today. Not happy!!!

So basically I went to get my rear worn tyres swapped over this morning to a set of Toyo Sport tyres (same size/width) and in the process the tyre shop scraped up my alloys preety bad

I noticed this whilst filling up on air, so stormed back to the shop and demanded compensation, to which they arranged for an alloy wheel specialist to undertake the wheel refurb.


On top of this I now have a stange scraping noise coming from both rear wheels straight after swapping tyres. Nothing is touching the alloys as I have inspected.

So if anyone could enlighten me on to what may cause this that would be awesome?

I personally think it may be due to them overtightening the lug nuts I use?

Or possibly my rear brakes have given up the ghost, as I was told a while back they would need replacing soon?

Only thing I find strange is that this noise happened after the tyre change


Any help would be appreciated as usual

Could be anywhere really, hub bearings, dust shield rubbing brake disc, worn brakes as you stated, worn axels, or even loose lug nuts.

Cheers mate, but seems a bit coincidental that the noise only just started this morning on both sides, after the new tyres were fitted. So would that not weigh out the hub bearings or axels?

Before I went down to the tyre shop early this morning with the old tyres on, my car did not make any noise whatsoever at the rear.

And all they did at the garage was jack car up at rear, removed all the lug nuts, removed the alloys from car, stuck new tyres on alloys and carefully placed back on my car and re-tightened lugs with drill and wrench.

It just seems so strange to me, that within minutes of driving off from garage, a scraping sound occurs with new tyres on. I even took it back and they inspected and we couldnt see anything rubbing or any bends in dust shields.

Very odd if rear brakes just gave up the ghost there and then

Hmm that is strange, did you check the rear brake pads while the rear wheels were off? Are the rear wheels the same size?

Different tyres fit differently even if they are the same size/profile etc
They have different sidewalls so could be scrubbing your arches , hard to tell though without hearing it you won't be able to see any physical scraping till it has done it a few times, have you noticed it over bumpy surfaces at all?

The rear wheels are the same size. I replaced old tyres with the same size 235/40Z R17 94Y just a different make "TOYO T1 SPORT".

Ive checked the arches and the back of the alloys against the coilovers etc and nothing seems to be anywhere near in contact.

The scraping noise itself seems to be apparent when I bump up speed, but goes away at higher speeds and when I go around large corners either left or right.

Im gonna jack up the car tomorrow morning with my Dad and remove both rear alloys again and then tighten up the lug nuts manually, without a powertool.

I think at this point as mentioned above it may well be the brake discs/pads, as its making that same kind of scraping/grinding noise that happens when their wearing down.

I just wanted to be sure, as the only thing that threw me off was the fact that the car was fine this morning, but had this issue straight after the tyre change.

Yeah what I was saying is even though the tyre may be the same size they all fit different . Had falkens that never scraped but when I changed to pilot sports they scraped as the sidewalls are fatter Even though still the exact same size tyre . Just have to go through process of elimination bud , check it one thing at a time till you find it

Check dust plates behind the discs when they took wheel off they'll have dropped them in it bending them in towards the disc

Toyos always tend to be wider than many other tyres that are meant to be the same size. When I swapped my 225/40/18 fulkens for 225/40/18 toyos I had to give the rear arches a stronger roll to clear.

I would go with fez! From experience of changing wheels its very easy to do.

But as has been said check the tyres too!

Hey guys, thanks for all the advice.

Ive managed to get the wheels off again and jack the car up but couldnt see any areas of rubbing or anything wrong with the dust shield.

Ive also taken the car out for several test drives today and noticed that the scraping/grinding noise is present at low speeds, but also when I accelerate to a high rpm in any gear. The noise is definetely coming from the rear wheels.

From what I can see I believe it may be either the rear of the dust shield or my brake discs/pads as they look preety worn (I have included pics to examine). I was told a while back at horsham developments that they were getting low.

Any suggestions on this matter would be greatly appreciated. I really want this noise to go away


Would these be the cause of the grinding sound? Note that both pads are showing metal around edges and a lot of the brown compound has been worn away in the centre and edges. Pics:

ok, so i think i may have cracked it, just been doing a bit of research and from what I can see on the car, the brake pads have completely gone, as in no padding at al between the disc and calipers. That would surely explain the grinding/scraping noise at low and high rpms from rear wheels?

Anyone agree with these findings?


If so I can rest easy and will be upgrading all brake pads and brake discs to uprated ones in a weeks time. Will leave car on driveway for now

I had this problem recently and it turned out that one of the pads was completely worn

looks to me like one of your brakes is binding the disc looks like its getting really hot poss caliper or pads seized in sliders
