theyre all the same. But.. k&n is better than OEM in my opinion..

$40 for a filter? thats more than how much the oil is.. youre getting ripped off for a name.

I prefer the sard or power enterprise filters. They have better filtration and are magnetic they use a steel mesh and paper system so they are worth the extra money you pay for them.

They're not all the same that's a silly comment to make. Use a quality oil filter or at least OEM unless you want particles of crap floating around your oil galleries. I prefer PureOne but the local shop doesn't stock it any more so back to OEM for now. Amsoil make really good filters too :)

and i have discovered magnetic sump plugs are good at holding onto any metal grit that is in there as well

well so far i've heard of it happening to 3 people.....not good . the trouble seems to be the way they are put together. on the standard rear diff plug you have a solid plug and the inside is drilled and tapped with a magnet screwed to it - best way. the aftermarket ones seem to be a thin hollow plug with the magnet in the middle which makes them weak as....

fair enough what about magnets on the oil filter?

with the plugs, after a little research it seams its the cheaper aluminum ones that weaken and break or the magnet comes out. Where as the expensive steel ones are the recommended ones

until they snap off in your sump :wack:
Ditto! Happened to me and I'll never have one again. Built out of chocolate as it snapped when I nipped the plug with a small socket. Sticking with the oem item as it's solid and far more reliable. Luckily I could unscrew the threadedd part out using long nose pliers.

so does the magnet come off or does the head of the plug snap?

After hearing this I think I will take mine out at the next oil change. It's a shame because it is a good way of keeping the little filings out of your engine. It also gives you advance warning if major damage is about to happen in your engine.

from what i understand the head of the bolt snaps off leaving the threaded portion in the hole. as jez said, he got lucky and was able to remove the rest with long nose pliers, but ive heard worse stories about having to get them drilled ut and re-tapped - nightmare that isnt worth it imo. to check the general health of the engine, when i do an oil change i may take the rocker cover off and just check for any wear on the cams, cruddy deposits ie slimy oily residues gunking up the crevices in the head but so far been ok. i think that changing your oil at a decent interval according to the use of the car is THE most important thing. when i had my fto i used to change the oil every 3k/6months without fail, then i did a service and tappet adjustment on a mates car with less miles on it and was shocked at the state of the valve train - covered in crap, now he is experiencing smoke which leads us to think the valve stem seals or rings are on thier way out (n/a) - all this has made me extra vigilant with my servicing on the silvia, its too good a car to neglect:nod:

There was a thread either on here or the SXOC saying that Champion filters were pretty good, what about these?
